I can see it now, hundreds, possibly thousands of “fitness model” hopefuls dieted down, putting on their Jan Tana, picking out their most revealing outfits all in an effort to land a” supplement deal” or “photo shoot”
While I appreciate the effort that these men and women are willing to put forth in an effort to be seen and discovered I’m here to tell you that 99% of you are wasting your time, money and energy, unless of course you are there to just get free samples and get stuck in the walkways in a sea of overly protiened farting bodybuilders.
Listen, I totally understand your desire to get involved in the industry as a working model but you must know where to invest your time and energy to get the most bang for your buck, and I really don’t believe that the Arnold or the Olympia are the places to do that.
Chances are your never going to get Robert Kennedy’s undivided attention, or have a chance to shake Lee Labrada’s hand in an effort to prove to him you are the next big thing in the industry and that he should give you a deal. These people are busy, especially at those shows and you are simply just another anxious model that is pining for their attention.
“Okay Clark, what do I do, where do I go” great question. My good buddy and OG photographer Ralph DeHaan always says. “go where they aint” That means don’t go to the Arnold or Olympia go to the other shows where every model in the world isn’t thinking of going.
Health and Fitness Business….nearly every equipment manufacturer in the business is there and only about 5 smart models/entrepreneurs. IHRSA, IDEA, FIBO, Natural Products Expo are a few others that won’t be inundated with scantly clad, overly tanned, carb depleted wanna bees.
Honestly if you want to start earing money in this industry and not do things for “exposure” and ego then you must start thinking out of the box and more like a business person and not just a “model”.
Remove yourself from that rat race and enter into a different way of thinking and watch how things begin to happen for you.
There is a lot to be said for someone who has a well thought out plan who approaches someone with a business card opposed to a modeling card with your butt hanging out. Let these people know what you can bring to the table other than big boobs or ripped abs.
The business of fitness is much bigger than you think, but if you follow the crowd every year to The Arnold chances are you’ll never find what you are looking for, and I would be remiss if I didn’t stress how important attending an FMI event is so you can really wrap your head around a much bigger picture. Ask anyone who has attended they’ll tell you.
